'All of our apprentices get along very well. Those who have been here for a while look after us newbies and show us the ropes. We often see each other at college and inside work. We formally meet up once a month to discuss issues and help each other with questions we may have. We've also met up outside of work like at our recent company awards evening which was a lot of fun'.
APPRENTICES
Meet our apprentices
Louise, 2nd Year Engineering Apprentice
“After initial training at CECAMM, the local engineering college, I arrived back onsite in February 2020 and completed various shop floor rotations.
I was then working with Design Engineering. I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of an engineering team and helping to produce real and useful drawings; followed by more technical rotations, including the Materials Laboratory.
I have enjoyed the in-depth rotations as it has given me the opportunity to stretch myself and put the engineering knowledge picked up from my HNC qualification to good use. I look forward to working with many more GKN employees and discovering where my apprenticeship will take me.”
Matt, 2nd year Operations Fitter Apprentice
“When starting at GKN Aerospace, I was a bit nervous to begin with as I was unsure of what to expect. After a short while of being here, it was one of the best choices I have made, as I enjoy what I do and get on well with everyone.
I had previously been at CECAMM College for 2 years and had learnt some skills, which has helped with my apprenticeship. I am now halfway through my second year and am getting more confident with the tools every day I use them.
In the future, I would like to become a team leader as I think that would be a good opportunity. I also feel that becoming an aircraft fitter is one of the best things you can do to start with, as it gives you a good understanding of the products manufactured within the company."
Robbie, 2nd Year Technical Apprentice
“Since starting my apprenticeship with GKN I have rotated through many departments within the company, as a result of this I have developed a wide range of skills and knowledge that I will be able to use throughout the rest of my career as an engineer.
I have already worked with lots of great people who have encouraged me to develop my skills and challenge myself as a young engineer, all helping me to achieve my goal of becoming a fully qualified Tool Design Engineer.”
