Engineering Team Lead (Hoogeveen)

The role

For the Defense Engineering & Technology organization in the Netherlands we are looking for an Engineering Team Lead. The Engineering Team Lead plays a pivotal role in bringing the deliverables for Technology Development and Engineering projects to a great success on time and within budget. You will be part of a dedicated, multidisciplinary project team within GKN Fokker Aerospace and responsible to lead a team (or teams) with a variety of different engineering functions in order to deliver the assigned engineering project or Technology Development objectives on schedule, within budget, and to the defined technical requirements. The Engineering Team Lead is reporting into the Chief Engineer of the Structures&General product group.

In this role, you will

• Operationally lead an engineering team to deliver the tasks assigned to the team in order to achieve project or functional objectives through planning, work tasking, and execution of required design activities.
• Lead and develop technical solutions that are compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and airworthiness requirements, within agreed program, schedule, and manufacturing constraints.
• Identify and anticipate technical problems and offer solutions as appropriate.
• Lead engineering activities to support project bids and proposals
• Assess, manage and mitigate technical risk of all assigned activities
• Lead the creation of test specifications/plans and/or alternate means of compliance as required to demonstrate design solution complies with certification requirements.
• Ensure designs are cost effective using appropriate techniques for design such as manufacture and assembly (DFMA) and design to cost.
• Create and verify overall design definitions, including dimensions, materials, parts, process notes, assemblies, and tolerances which are aligned to all design requirements and objectives.
• Ensure all project deliverables are signed, checked, and approved as required in accordance with quality processes.
• Support technical and customer reviews, including formal gate reviews, including the creation and preparation of technical data and presentations.
• Perform all activities at a level of minimal supervision for multiple work packages and able to regularly oversee others.
• Lead continuous improvement within the engineering team to improve quality, reduce waste, and establish best practice is followed within the team.  
• Ensure knowledge and data generated by the team is effectively captured, transmitted, and stored in compliance with applicable quality processes.
• Work in cooperation and under the direction of the Chief Engineer to implement local and overall business objectives.
• Manage the operational team performance, engagement, and development through performance development plans, training, mentoring, and other initiatives.
• Ensure the engineering team has the capability and means to perform the required activities including IT provisions, toolsets, and licenses, escalating needs as required.
• Provide key performance indicators for team activities to drive continuous improvement and provide updates / reports, and standard measures to the senior management team, as reqd.
• Create a positive workplace environment through regular meetings, engagement & coaching.
• Ensure customer satisfaction is assessed and any resultant actions identified & implemented.
• Support manufacturing engineering team for all material and process definitions and requirements associated with the product design, where applicable.
• Support and oversee material and processes qualification process, ensuring compliance to internal, customer, and regulatory requirements, where applicable.

You are pro-active, self-starting and entrepreneurial, have good communication skills and you are a team player. You have worked before in a multidisciplinary environment and are familiar with Engineering and Technology Development. You are willing to learn and are able to arrange things. You will bring your passion and expertise/ talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:
•    Must possess a high level of engineering functional knowledge; typically Technical Excellence Framework level 4 or higher in an appropriate Area of Expertise, with some experience of having worked/interfaced with other Engineering & Manufacturing Engineering disciplines in order to manage successfully the functional project team.
•    Must possess a level of business expertise especially in the Aerospace industry and in the functional area the project/programme is responsible for (e.g. Design, Analysis, EWIS, Transparencies etc.) in order to successfully support the whole of the IPT in achieving the overall business objectives.
•    Must possess a good level of technical project leadership as the role is responsible for the on-time and cost delivery of the technical activities in their functional team at a level of quality acceptable to the IPT.
•    Must possess a high level of technical problem solving skills to manage successfully the technical activities on a project.
•    The role directly affects the non-recurring cost of the technical activities and the recurring price and cost to support of a resulting product. In this way the impact of the role is directly proportional to the size of the project on which they are employed and the forecasted future sales and in-service support costs.
•    The role requires a good interpersonal skills especially for managing the technical community and associated interfaces– see below for details of skills and personal attributes required.
•    8-10+ years of relevant experience gained within an engineering discipline, ideally within an aerospace environment and in multi-disciplinary engineering project teams (Design/CM, EWIS, Analysis, M&P, Manufacturing/ Industrialization).
•    Able to act under own initiative within defined functional procedures / governance.
•    Ability to describe technical information to a wide audience and at all levels within the business.
•    The ability to act as an integrator in a customer-facing role.
•    Demonstrates a commercial awareness to be able to analyse customer requirements in order to create or input into offload packages and/or bid documentation.
